Suckering deciduous shrub to 3.5 m high and potentially much wider; leaves opposite, palmately compound; leaflets 5-7; inflorescence an elongate cylindrical panicle with numerous tubular white flowers; anthers red; fruit smooth.

Native to a small area in the southeast but frequently cultivated and hardy much further north, to USDA Zone 4.
