Taxonomy

Family: Eriocaulaceae

Habitat

Still, shallow water or occasionally in deep water. This colony was found growing in the shallow waters of a lake in the Adirondacks.

Associates

 

Distribution

New England south to NC at high elevation, west through the Great Lakes to MN.

Morphology

Aquatic or emergent perennial. Leaves all basal, thin, acuminate, 3-9 parallel-nerved with conspicuous cross-veinlets. Scapes solitary, 5-7 ridged to 20 cm long, much longer in deep water. Heads gray except for dense, white-hairy tepals and receptacular bracts; receptable glabrous. Fruit a thin-walled capsule.

This species also occurs in Ireland and Scotland.
