Habitat
Dry to moist woods, often in rocky soil.

Distribution
NY and MA, south to FL, west through IL to KS and OK.
Morphology
Low, branching shrub. Leaves opposite, serrate, acuminate, subcordate to acute at the base. Flowers white, in flattened or concave cymes, petals 5; sepals 10. Few marginal sterile flowers with showy bracts. Stems smooth with white pith.
Notes
Flowers June and July.
Wetland indicator: Facultative Upland
These images are of a typical cultivated form with mostly sterile flowers. The wild form has mostly fertile flowers and only a few showy bracts.
