Sandy or muddy shores, fens, wet meadows.
Associates
Distribution
Newfoundland and Quebec to MN, south to GA and AL.
Morphology
Herbaceous annual, or perennial from short, leafy stolons; stems slender, erect, 10-60 cm; leaves linear to narrowly oblanceolate, 1-4 cm long, obtuse, tapering to the narrow base, 1-nerved or weakly 3-nerved; inflorescence compact or more often loose; bracts subulate; sepals lanceolate, acute or acuminate, 3-5 mm; petals 2.5-3 mm; stamens 12-22; styles 3(4), under 1 mm; fruit red-purple, mostly conic, 4-6 mm.

Wetland indicator: FACW
Similar to, and can hybridize with, H. majus (A. Gray) Britton which has leaves more rounded at the base and with 3-5(-7) primary veins.
