Taxonomy

Family: Hypericaceae

Habitat

In sterile, often sandy soil.

Associates

 

Distribution

ME to Ontario and MN, south to FL and TX.

Morphology

Annual; stems erect, 10-50 cm, with numerous slender, usually opposite branches; leaves appressed, scale-like, 1-4 mm; flowers subsessile, mostly solitary in the axils; sepals lance-linear, 1.5-2.5 mm; petals 2-4 mm; stamens mostly 5-10; styles 3, 1 mm; fruit slender-conic, 4-7 mm.

Flowers June to September

Wetland indicator: FACU

The name orange-grass refers not to the color but the smell of the crushed foliage. Another common name for this plant is pineweed.
