Taxonomy

Family: Poaceae

Habitat

Borders of streams and ponds. Marshy habitats and calcareous springy locations.

Associates

In marshes with Alisma subcordatum, Asclepias incarnata, Bidens cernua, Bidens coronata, Boehmeria cylindrica, Juncus effusus solutus, Lippia lanceolata, Mumulus ringens, Peltandra virginica, Rumex orbiculatus, Rumex verticillatus, Sagittaria latifolia, Scutellaria lateriflora, Sium suave, Typha latifolia. In fens with Eupatorium perfoliatum, Glyceria striata, Impatiens capensis, Lycopus americanus, Mentha arvensis villosa, Scirpus atrovirens.

Distribution

Found in all 48 contiguous states.

Morphology

Perennial grass. Leaves harshly scabrous. Culms terete. Spikelets oblong, 4-6mm long, 1-2mm broad.

Notes

Flowers late July to late September

Wetland indicator: Obligate

The leaves of this grass are highly abrasive, often making a trek through marshy areas hazardous in the summer months. .
