Taxonomy

Synonymous with Prenanthes bootii (DC.) D. Dietr.

Habitat

Alpine sites.

Associates

 

Distribution

Endemic to a few high peaks in ME, NH, VT, and Essex County NY.

Morphology

Herbaceous perennial; stems 10-30(-40) cm, glabrous below, villous puberulent above or in the inflorescence; leaves glabrous, pale beneath, entire or merely toothed, the lower with a deltoid or cordate blade 1.5-5 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, exceeded by the petiole; inflorescence narrow, somewhat thyrsoid; heads mostly nodding; involucres 8-12 mm, black or blackish-green, the pigment spots minute and usually crowded; principle bracts 8-11(-13), minutely puberulent at the tip, otherwise glabrous; some of the reduced outer bracts usually at least half as long as the main ones; flowers 9-18, whitish; pappus stramineous; achenes several-ribbed but only obscurely striate.

This species is considered to be critically imperiled throughout its limited range and has a global rank of G2, with only 20 known occurrences worldwide.
