Moist, open ground. Fields, meadows, open woods.

Distribution
Newfoundland and Quebec to southern Manitoba, south VA to MO and in mountains to the Carolinas.
Morphology
Fibrous-rooted perennial, to 60 cm high. Leaves alternate, oblanceolate to elliptic, obtuse, narrowed to a petiolar base; cauline leaves over 1 mm wide; bracteal leaves well-developed and exceeding the ovary. Flowers 4-merous, diurnal, nodding but erect during anthesis; sepals reflexed; petals yellow, 5-10 mm, notched; style 3-10 mm; ovary 4-angled. Fruit sharply 4-angled.

Wetland indicator: Facultative
I had this picture for several years and for some reason thought it was of Linum medium, but on closer inspection noticed it only had 4 petals and the distinctive x-shaped style of Oenothera.
