Taxonomy

Family: Asteraceae

Habitat

Calcareous habitats. Dry rocky woods and mesic woods. Shaded limy springy slopes.

Associates

In rocky woods with Aster shortii, Eupatorium rugosum, Fraxinus quadrangulata, Quercus muhlenbergii, Solidago flexicaulis, Staphylea trifolia. In mesic woods with Acer saccharum, Arisaema triphyllum, Asimina triloba, Carya cordiformis, Claytonia virginica, Dicentra cucullaria, Euonymus atropurpures, Fraxinus americana, Hydrophyllum appendiculatum, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Osmorhiza claytonii, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Sanicula gregaria, Smilacina racemosa, Tilia americana, Uvularia grandiflora.

Distribution

MN, Ontario, western Vermont south to LA and GA.

Morphology

Erect herbaceous perennial, from 2-5' high. Leaves pinnately lobed; some sinuses extending more than halfway to the midrib, the terminal lobe usually shallowly serrate; rays more than 1 cm long, white to yellowish, often lacking (missing in almost all of these pictures). Achenes less than 4.5 mm long, more of less 3-ribbed, but otherwise smooth..

Wetland indicator: Upland

Sometimes common, almost weedy, where limestone is close to the surface.
