Taxonomy

Family: Fagaceae

Habitat

Dry upland woods and barrens.

Associates

 

 Distribution

Southwest MA and southern NY west to OH, IN and southern IA, south to FL and TX.

Morphology

Small to large deciduous tree. Twigs and petioles pubescent. Leaves obovate or cruciform, to 15 cm long and 10 cm wide, pubescent on both sides with erect, few-branched hairs, those of the upper surface often deciduous; lobes few, rounded, the main pair of lateral lobes often constricted at the base and truncate to retuse at the summit. Acorns 1-1.5 cm, more or less sessile; cup hemispheric or pyriform, covering half the ovoid nut.
