Habitat

Wet woods, swamps, lake shores. 

Associates

 

 Distribution

ME west to OH, south to FL.

Morphology

Deciduous, branching and often colonial shrub to 2 m. Leaves thin, setose-hairy, eglandular, oblanceolate to obovate, 3-6 cm. Flowers white (rarely pink), appearing after the leaves emerge, pedicels and corolla-tube stipitate-glandular; corolla funnelform, the lobes reflexed and a little shorter than the tube in length but more than half as long); stamens 5; ovary stipitate-glandular.

The flowers of this species are highly fragrant.
